Payment lifecycle

Idle

  1. Tokenize

The shop saves a reusable token and never sees your real card number.

  2. 3-D Secure

Your bank confirms it's you, and the fraud liability shifts to them.

  3. Authorize

Your bank holds the money. Not taken yet, and the hold can expire.

  4. Capture

Now the shop really charges you each cycle, but the cash only lands later, at settlement.

  5. Settle

The shop gets the cash ~2 days later.

When it renews

A month later the saved token is charged automatically, while you are away, with no 3-D Secure challenge, because you authenticated once already. The money settles the same way, about two days on, and you never have to be there.

When it fails

When the saved card has expired, that automatic charge is declined. No one is here, so the shop retries for weeks and emails you to update your card, but a dead card stays dead. It finally revokes access: involuntary churn. You did not leave, your card did.
